CBA-DFID Travel Bursary Fund

Eligibility

The CBA-DFID Travel Bursary Fund is open to any experienced UK based television producer or multi-media journalist, working for established broadcasters or production companies, wishing to extend their knowledge of the developing world, and wishing to work on programmes/stories in a Commonwealth developing country for transmission on UK television. Established freelancers may also apply as long as their application is supported by an industry referee.

Deadline for Proposals

The Travel Bursary is a 'rolling' fund with no deadlines or closing dates for applications. The Scheme funds a limited number of bursaries per year and these are administered on a 'first come, first served' basis...according to suitability.

Terms and applications

Successful applicants will be able to spend up to three months in a Commonwealth developing country of their choice. They will be required to use this time making contacts and developing programme ideas for use back in the UK, or to research a specific programme or programmes intended for transmission in the UK.

Applicants should have at least one ‘core’ idea for development but are expected to demonstrate significant research into the area they are proposing to visit and must also indicate a range of potential story ideas suitable for multi –media outlets in the UK. E.G. Local newspaper coverage, on-line, magazine features etc. Where possible Bursars will be expected to network with broadcast professionals in the countries they are visiting as part of their bursary travel.

The Travel Bursary Scheme operates as a rolling programme there are no annual deadlines.

The Bursary will support travel to, and subsistence within, a Commonwealth developing country for between one and three months.

The Bursary is of variable value, depending on the destination and duration of stay, but is offered up to a maximum value of £10,000.

Applicants will be asked for references from their Head of Department or equivalent, and an endorsement by a commissioning editor/broadcaster indicating a positive interest in considering transmitting material generated by the project.

Accountability and monitoring

At the end of their visit, applicants will be required to complete a cost report accounting for their expenditure, and another evaluating their visit. Applicants will also be requested to write a brief account of their experience, and to keep the CBA-DFID-Broadcast Media Scheme Fund informed of television/media outputs made as a result of the visit.
