Pandemic

Don’t panic during a pandemic

The CBA is running a one-day workshop on managing organisations during a pandemic on 28 May, to precede a major broadcasting summit in the Asia-Pacific.

The summit and workshop take place in Manado, Sulawesi, Indonesia. The training, targeted at broadcast professionals, aims to raise awareness of pandemic issues and provide the knowledge and tools to enable their stations to keep broadcasting and serve the public in the case of a fast-breaking pandemic or other transnational crisis.

The workshop speakers, all eminent experts in their field, are:

Building on our experience in training broadcasters in disaster preparedness, the workshop will focus on the often neglected but extremely serious issue of disease outbreak. During a pandemic, broadcasters have a key role to play in saving lives, providing vital information and supporting public health officials.

The workshop will study examples of pandemics, including potential ones – how they spread and how they can be contained – with plenty of recent cases to draw on, such as swine flu (H1N1) and bird flu (H5N1). It will also cover topics such as the importance of media preparedness, crisis management planning, dealing with misinformation (particularly in regard to social media), post-disaster trauma and recovery.

The Asia Media Summit, organised by the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development, runs from 29 to 31 May 2013.
