Seychellois Broadcaster Wins SADC Documentary Competition
Last week in Windhoek, Namibia, Ms. Anna Ah-Wan, a radio broadcaster with the Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation was awarded first prize in a radio documentary competition. Her episode from a 13 episode series, titled 'Water is Life', won with the competition running with the theme 'Water in the SADC Region'.
Ms. Ah-Wan explained that the 'Water is Life' series was thanks to another prize, she won in 2008 when she submitted a proposal for her documentary to the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association and was subsequently awarded a £2000 travel bursary with which to conduct her research.
CBA Awards – Call For Entries
The 2011 CBA Awards are now open to entries. There are 7 Awards, including two new Awards this year specifically for developing countries. These are the One World Media Award for the Best Programming produced in a Developing Country, and the World Bank Award for a Programme covering Development Success.
Entry is free to both members and non-members but each organisation can only enter a maximum of two entries per award. Television or Radio programmes produced, or broadcast, for the first time between 1st September 2009 and 31st August 2010 are eligible for entry. Sally-Ann is currently Director of the WorldView project for CBA. Prior to joining the CBA, Sally-Ann's media career was in production, both radio and TV. She has also had numerous roles as a Broadcast Executive for the BBC and in the commercial broadcasting sector.

Professional Fellowship Scheme
The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission has announced a supplementary round of Fellowships in 2010 for their Professional Fellowship Scheme for specific organisations. The details of the Scheme can be seen here, but the closing date is the 17 September 2010.
The Commission supports fellowships for mid-career professionals from developing Commonwealth countries to spend periods (typically three months) with a relevant UK host organisation in their field for a programme of professional development. This can include a very limited time for attendance at short courses as well as visits to other organisations.

Post Carbon Institute Fellow and Population Media Center founder and president, William Ryerson, has released a report discussing the massive increase in population and its impact. The 17-page report entitled 'POPULATION: The Multiplier of Everything' is available for free in PDF format here.

Maximising Income and Controlling Costs
The CBA with AIBD and Ministry of Information and Culture, Malaysia, have released a new publication 'Maximising Income and Controlling Costs in Small and Medium Broadcasting Operations'.
Written by Mano Wilkramanayake, CBA Board Member & Group Director, Capital Maharaja Organisation Ltd, the handbook is divided into three sections. Firstly it addresses tackling ways to maximize income and discussing various income streams. Secondly, it looks at corporate planning, marketing plans and budgeting. And lastly, it examines controlling costs and includes samples of a production budget summary and a detailed production cost sheet.
