We are proud to introduce the three recipients of this year’s CBA-Chevening bursaries, who have received scholarships for postgraduate media study in the UK, to start this autumn.
As ever, the CBA received a high standard of entries for these scholarships, but we can only select one media professional to study at each participating university.
The CBA-Chevening bursars for 2013 are:
Setsabile Barbara Sibisi 
A senior journalist at the Swaziland Television Authority, Setsabile will be studying at City University London.
“It is a great honour for me to be offered the Chevening scholarship to study an MA in International Journalism,” she said, and cited “being a woman in a male-dominated industry and department” as one of the reasons why the bursary was so important to her. “Being afforded this opportunity will help me enhance my education level to be able to assist in the implementation of the digital migration system in the country and Swaziland Television Authority,” added Setsabile.
Chikondi Gausi 
Chikondi is off to the University of East Anglia, and is a journalist at the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC).
“I believe that the master’s in Media and International Development is an eye-opener for a reporter like me working for a public broadcaster,” Chikondi said, “[The MBC’s] mandate is not only to inform, but to also raise awareness on various development projects going on in my country and abroad.” She said that she hoped the course would help ways of using her media house “to interact with local communities and increase participation in matters of public interest.”
Ahmer Shaheen 
Head of special investigations at GEO TV in Pakistan, Ahmer will be studying the Multimedia Journalism (Broadcast) master’s at the University of Westminster. Ahmer said that the grant “could not have come at a better time”, as he wants to pursue his desire to teach journalism.
“I have trained hundreds of reporters and undercover investigators all over Pakistan in the last five years,” he said, adding that in the last one month he trained over 100 reporters for election coverage and monitoring. “I want to come back more qualified and train not only people who are working for/with my organisation, but also other professionals working in the media industry. This will enable me to reach out to the ‘cream’ of media professionals in Pakistan and build a even stronger team of investigative journalists.”
