Every year the CBA runs courses covering different aspects of broadcasting, from production training to management skills. Courses are free to full-time employees of CBA member organisations. Many of the courses are self-directed – so they are available throughout the year and can be completed at your own pace.

The current list of courses:

Introduction to radio production      

This self-directed course focuses on interviewing, writing and production skills for radio journalists. Over the modules journalists are expected to develop the must-have basic skills of radio production in writing dispatches, conducting interviews, making packages, planning programmes and extending their knowledge in programming.

Radio news production   

This self-directed course offers an insight into producing radio news programmes in a digital age. You will study issues surrounding radio news reporting, and production techniques to ensure high-quality audio and editorial content. There is also a section covering ethical considerations.

Introduction to change management 

This self-directed course introduces broadcasters to the concepts of change management and performance management. Areas covered include the basics of common attitudes to change, communication techniques, performance management and appraisal systems.

Introduction to website development for broadcasters 

As part of the move towards greater integration between traditional and digital media, this self-directed course will give radio and TV producers a better understanding of potential and the most effective use of the web and other appropriate interactive technologies to best benefit audiences.

Introduction to TV news reporting                   

This self-directed course is a distillation of the essential skills of TV production. It aims to help working TV reporters and producers to understand a range of issues, and provide them with the skills applicable to their daily work.

Disaster reporting

This directed course prepares broadcasters for reporting during crises, disasters or emergencies. The comprehensive nine-week programme is tutored by two Australian journalist-academics. A range of practical activities are complemented by assessment tasks. Topics covered include information sources, logistical preparedness, emergency broadcast plan checklists, risk assessment, dealing with trauma, editorial ethics and broadcasting emergency information.
